Intestinal Protein and ADHD May Be Linked

It has been discovered that an intestinal protein, guanylyl cyclase-C (GC-C), also has receptors expressed in critical areas of the brain.

“ A biochemical pathway long associated with diarrhea and intestinal function may provide a new therapeutic target for treating ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) other neuropsychiatric disorders.”

Extracurricular Activities Help to Mediate Symptoms of ADHD

A recent study reveals that extracurricular activities not only improve grades and classroom behavior but also helps in mediating symptoms of ADHD. There is a positive association between extracurricular participation and academic achievement.

“Extracurricular activities also may be able to correct behaviours associated with boisterous children or those who have been diagnosed with a clinical medical condition, such as ADHD. In a study titled, ‘The Effects of Mixed Martial Arts on Behavior of Male Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder’, researchers found that a martial arts program two times per week helped increase the percentage of completed homework, frequency of following specific classroom rules, improved academic performance and improved classroom preparation of male children ages eight to 11 with ADHD.”

Spelling and Grammar Issues are ADHD Red Flags

Children diagnosed with ADHD are prone to issues related to spelling and grammar according to current research. Math problems have primarily been an issue identified in school but writing skills should be checked as well.

“Researchers found more than half of kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder had writing problems, whereas only ten to 20 percent of kids without the disorder had writing issues.”

ADHD Diagnosis on the Rise

There has been an increase of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder in the US. There has been an increase from 7 percent in 1998-2000 to 9 percent in 2001-2009.

“For the present report, it was not possible to discern whether growing prevalence indicates a true change in prevalence or increased detection and diagnosis of ADHD.”

ADD and High IQ Connection

Superior intelligence is no defense against the effects of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Many people tend to think that because they have a larger IQ, they wouldn’t be distracted by other things that most people with ADHD do. The majority of research shows that a large portion of children with ADHD have high IQ’s.

All of the 117 kids in this study fully met diagnostic criteria for ADD and all had IQ scores of 120 or more, placing them in the top 9 percent of their age group on basic intelligence. Some were strongest in verbal comprehension, some were strongest in visual-spatial reasoning, and some were equally strong in both.

Overlap in ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder Genes

A study published in advance online editions of Science Translational Medicine identifies common genetic link between ADHD and neuropsychiatric conditions such as Autism.

Researchers identified more genes in ADHD Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and shows that there is an overlap between some of the genes and those found in other neuropsychiatric conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
